Three Unconventional Ways to Use Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is so…2010, I know. There are a million blogs that will tell you that coconut oil will prevent cavities (check out my myth busting on “oil pulling” HERE), or balance your hormones. This is not that blog post. Instead I wanted to highlight three unconventional ways to use coconut oil in your home.

Scalp Treatment

Dry winter months or excessive ocean swimming can dry out your scalp, leaving embarrassing dandruff. Coconut oil is the only treatment I’ve found that actually helps quell dandruff and dry hair. After wetting your hair (preferably in the bathtub), simply massage organic coconut oil into the roots of your hair and scalp. Let the oil soak into your scalp for 10-15 minutes and wash two to three times with safer shampoo. No need to use conditioner since the oil is so nourishing!

Shoe Shine

This is a fast and easy way to make your shoes look spiffy before heading out the door. Simply rub a small portion of coconut oil on your shoe and wipe away the excess with a tissue.

Lubricant

Coconut oil makes a great lubricant, but can’t be used with condoms since it can break down the latex. Simply warm up the oil in your hands and rub away ;)! Looking for safer lubricants and condoms? Check out Certified B Corporation, Sustain Natural.

Rest assured coconut oil still makes for great homemade popcorn and a high heat cooking oil, but give these three unconventional uses a try!
