Best Date Spots in Santa Monica & Venice

Eating my way around Los Angeles has been one of my favorite parts of falling in love with this city. Here are some of my favorite date night spots for those venturing around Venice and Santa Monica. All of these places are slightly upscale and a little on the pricey side, but that’s usually exactly what you want for a romantic night on the town!

GJELINA

Located in the heart of Venice, on Abbot Kinney, Gjelina dishes up beautiful vegetable heavy meals and a very hip ambiance. Make reservations far ahead of time, or better yet, show up for an early dinner between 5-5:30. They don’t have a full bar, so be sure to dive into some of their vermouth and champagne specialty cocktails. Looking for an exclusive party? You can rent the upstairs room which overlooks the street. Vegetarian and vegan friendly.

Salt Air

Delicious food, with an emphasis on seafood, Salt Air is the place that made me fall in love with oysters. Chic interior, the only downside is this restaurant can get a little loud when crowded. Great service.

The Tasting Kitchen

Probably one of my favorite places to eat in L.A., The Tasting Kitchen has delicious cocktails and a radicchio salad you won’t want to miss. Finish your meal with one of their cheese plates, you won’t regret it. Also a popular destination, either make reservations ahead of time, or eat in their bar early in the evening. I personally prefer the mood in the bar!

Rustic Canyon

If you like amazing wine, eat dinner here. Their menu features healthy, but umami-laden California-American cuisine. If they have the dumplings on the appetizer menu, order two. And I had one of the best deserts I’ve ever had here: toasted brioche with caramel and strawberries. You need to try it to believe me. And then you can thank me.

Esters Wine  Shop

Owned by the same people as Rustic Canyon (and several other west side favorites), Esters Wine Bar is a great place to start your evening. Outdoor seating and a chic, white subway lined bar, this new hangout has delicious wines and savory appetizers.

Herringbone

Offering amazing seafood (try the oysters if that’s your thing) and cocktails, Herringbone is a great restaurant if you’re staying close to the beach. It’s a short walk from Main Street, the Expo Line and Third Street Promenade. Word on the street is they offer a killer brunch as well. The space is large and beautiful, with a living wall and hanging lights.

Locanda Portifino

This small Italian bistro is hidden on Montana Avenue and offers authentic Mediterranean fare. The majority of the pasta is fresh and homemade (ask before ordering) and it’s a great spot for a lazy afternoon lunch if you want to beat the crowds.

The Santa Monica Pier

Don’t roll your eyes, the pier is actually quite charming at night. I love taking the roller coaster after-hours with my sweetheart and playing some arcade games.

The Chestnut Club

End your evening at the Chestnut Club for a delicious cocktail. I particularly enjoy their Old Fashions and specialty cocktails. Need a night snack? Dive into the dill chips and deviled eggs.
